The MP for Putney, Roehampton and Southfields has gained a "great insight" into
water quality in the Thames river, according to the minister.
Justine Greening - who was elected in May 2005 - said she now has a greater understanding of the importance of the waterway for wildlife and recreation.
Her comments follow a recent trip along the river aboard the Environment Agency’s monitoring boat, Champion, with Innes Jones, the area manager for south-east Thames.
"It's reassuring to know that the health of the river is improving for both people and the environment through the good work of the Environment Agency and partner organisations," stated Ms Greening.
The women also paid a visit to Wandsworth Riverside Quarter, where a new habitat was recently created for fish.
Ms Jones added that it was wonderful to witness the young fish - including juvenile sea bass, roach, bream and dace - which have already been attracted to the area.
