Tata Steel has announced that it has set targets for the company's carbon emissions and aims to substantially reduce them by 2020.
According to a report by Reuters, the Indian organisation intends to cut its carbon dioxide output to 1.8 tonnes per tonne of steel produced by 2012 and aims to reduce this further to 1.5 tonnes by 2020.
Managing director Mr Nerurkar told the news provider that it should be relatively straight forward to lower emissions to 1.7 tonnes, but added that, reducing them further will be a challenge.
Tata Steel currently releases two tonnes of CO2 per tonne of steel produced, which is already below the industry average of 2.2 tonnes.
It is one of the ten largest steel producers in the world and has operations in more than 50 nations around the globe.
The company currently has a production capacity of 30 million tonnes of steel per year across its manufacturing units which are located in 26 countries around the world.
