Air Monitoring
Precise snow depth measurement with ultrasonic technology
Jul 22 2022
Sommer Messtechnik’s USH-9 is an ultrasonic sensor which provides precise, continuous and non-contact recording of snow depths. The rugged design features a special ultrasonic head; with its extremely low energy consumption, the USH-9 is the perfect solution for operation in extreme weather conditions, particularly for alpine and high alpine terrain.
Its robust, sealed and therefore maintenance free ceramic membrane has a shield to protect it from the effects of ice and snow. This device also includes integrated temperature compensation and intelligent spectrum analysis filters snow and rain precipitation. The USH-9 goes in to ‘sleep’ mode to save energy consumption, which is especially useful for solar powered models.
The USH-9 is perfect for use in extreme weather conditions; its high level of operational safety enables a permanent precise and dependable recording of measurement values, so it is ubiquitous to avalanche warning services, ski regions research stations and the energy sector and widely used by meteorologists.
Snow depth is a crucial parameter for monitoring the snowpack. It must be measured regularly as the development of the snowpack is subject to strong regional and temporal fluctuations and significantly influenced by actual weather Ultrasonic Measurement of Snow Depth conditions (snow or rainfall, air temperature, wind etc.). The USH-9 is a non-contact instrument and will not affect the snowpack; it measures depths of up to ten metres continuously and with convenient remote data transmission if required.
