Mobile measurement by handheld surface radar

10 Mar, 2026

The SOMMER Handheld Surface Radar HSR-10 is a highly mobile, non-contact radar instrument designed to measure surface velocities in rivers and streams. By capturing accurate surface velocity data, users can derive valuable insights into flow behaviour, discharge estimation, and overall hydraulic conditions.

Engineered specifically for demanding environments, the HSR-10 is particularly effective during flood events. Its non-contact measurement principle enhances operator safety while ensuring reliable data collection, even under extreme conditions. The device enables fast, flexible, and accurate measurements, making it ideal for mobile applications, emergency response, and routine monitoring. By improving measurement efficiency and reducing setup time, the HSR-10 significantly enhances river and stream monitoring accuracy.

In early 2026, the HSR app will receive a major upgrade with the release of the HSR Commander Advanced version, available for existing units. This update expands functionality and improves site handling and monitoring capabilities.

Key new features include saving and managing measurement points, capturing and storing photos directly within the app, recording the precise GPS position of each measurement during mobile operations, and viewing measurement spectra for quality assessment.

The integrated spectral view allows users to evaluate signal quality and verify measurement reliability on site, supporting improved quality assurance and data validation processes.

With its advanced mobility, safety-focused non-contact technology, and enhanced software capabilities, the SOMMER HSR-10 provides a powerful and modern solution for hydrological monitoring - especially in dynamic and flood-prone environments.
