Methane detection in ATEX-classified heat treatment environments

15 Oct, 2026

Across modern manufacturing, heat treatment is widely used to enhance the strength, durability and performance of metal components through precisely controlled thermal cycles.

However, when these processes rely on methane-fired furnaces, gas leaks can create a serious safety risk in environments already exposed to multiple potential ignition sources.

Methane may escape from burners, gas supply lines, pressure regulators, valves or furnace connections. In poorly ventilated areas, even relatively small leaks can lead to gas accumulation and the formation of a potentially explosive atmosphere.

For this reason, fixed gas detection systems continuously monitor methane concentration, typically expressed as %LFL (lower flammable limit). The LFL represents the minimum concentration of combustible gas in air capable of supporting combustion. Early detection allows operators to take preventive actions such as increasing ventilation, isolating the gas supply or safely shutting down equipment, before hazardous conditions develop.

For methane, catalytic sensing remains one of the most established detection technologies. The principle is based on the combustion of gas on the surface of a heated catalyst. The resulting heat changes the electrical resistance of a platinum element, generating a signal proportional to the methane concentration in the surrounding air. This technology combines reliable detection with fast response, making it well suited to demanding industrial environments.

Heat treatment facilities may include ATEX Zone 1 and Zone 2 areas around furnaces and gas distribution systems. Gas detection equipment installed in these locations must therefore combine appropriate hazardous area certification with the reliability required for safety-related applications.

The Sensitron SMART 3G C2 is designed specifically for combustible gas detection using catalytic sensing technology. ATEX Category 2 certified, it is suitable for Zone 1 installations and can also be used in Zone 2 areas.

The detector further incorporates hardware certified to SIL2 principles and software developed according to SIL3 requirements, together with IECEx certification, supporting reliable methane monitoring in critical heat treatment applications.
