New automatic measuring system sets a new benchmark for hydrogen and multigas analysis in the field

23 Jul, 2025

As hydrogen assumes an increasingly important role in the global shift to low-carbon energy systems, the need for precise and reliable gas analysis has never been greater. MRU GmbH has launched the MGAprime-H2—a portable, automatic measuring system (P-AMS) that combines advanced analytical features with field-ready convenience.

Designed for industrial and environmental applications where gas quality is crucial — such as hydrogen production, biomethane injection, and process control — the MGAprime-H2 offers the accuracy of a stationary analyser in a durable, portable design. Its key features include MRU’s robust, drift-free NDIR technology, enabling high-resolution multigas analysis with long-term stability, even in challenging environments.

The MGAprime-H2 addresses the complex measurement needs of the energy transition. It provides the accuracy and ease of use required by plant operators and service engineers, emphasising long-term reliability and user-focused automation.

The analyser’s technical capabilities support this mission. Using high-precision NDIR sensors, the MGAprime-H2 can detect up to eight gases at once — including CO, CO₂, CH₄, NOₓ species, SO₂, and N₂O — and also measure oxygen with electrochemical or paramagnetic sensors. Hydrogen detection is achieved through electrochemical technology. These features are essential for combustion optimisation, emission compliance, and fuel-switching scenarios.

Integrated gas conditioning is accomplished by a high-efficiency Peltier gas cooler with dual automatic condensate removal, ensuring sensor protection and sample integrity. The system also includes automatic zero calibration and internal volume flow measurement, further reducing manual intervention and increasing reliability.

User interaction is managed through a large, full-color TFT touchscreen running on a Linux operating system, featuring intuitive menus and graphical data displays. Output formats include CSV and PDF, enabling integration into QA/QC documentation workflows. Remote operation is achievable via a VNC server over LAN or WLAN, while data transfer is conducted through Ethernet or USB.

Engineered for modern industrial environments, the MGAprime-H2 is housed in a rugged all-metal enclosure with impact-resistant corner protectors and multiple I/O options — including eight analog outputs and four analogue inputs — ensuring compatibility with existing plant control systems.

With complete combustion calculations, programmable measurement intervals, and data logging as standard, the MGAprime-H2 is a comprehensive tool for emission measurement, fuel characterisation, and gas quality verification. From hydrogen infrastructure to waste-to-energy plants, MRU’s latest innovation sets a new standard for portable gas analysis in the era of decarbonisation.
