Professional qualifications have been shown to lead to an increase in salary through a recent survey carried out by the ENDS Report, CIWEM and SocEnv, with 20 percent of respondents receiving a pay rise as a direct result of gaining additional qualifications.
However, CIWEM recognises that many professionals do not have the time to undertake the rigorous assessment process of becoming chartered. Therefore, for those unable to attempt the whole Chartered Member process at present, CIWEM has created a new grade to recognise their professional qualifications and expertise – the Member grade.
The benefits of this new Member grade include the use of designatory letters MCIWEM; subscriptions to CIWEM’s publications; the opportunity to network with leading environmental professionals at CIWEM events; the opportunity to contribute to CIWEM’s international policy, publications and conferences; and discounts on professional and consumer products.
There will always be an opportunity for Members to transfer to Chartered Member and gain recognition as a Chartered Engineer, Chartered Environmentalist and Chartered Scientist, as these external registrations can only be considered on application for Chartered Member.
Rosemary Butler, CIWEM Director of Membership & Professional Development, said:
“Chartered Member, C.WEM, has long been seen as the gold standard for environmental professionals but there are those who do not have the time to undertake the rigorous assessment process that this entails. CIWEM is delighted to be able to recognise the professionalism all those working in the environment by offering a grade of membership that will bring professionals with an honours degree and relevant experience improved career prospects, peer recognition and enhanced professional status.”
