A major organisation in Zimbabwe has urged farmers operating in the country to do all they can to conserve top soil which contains the most nutrients and minerals.

According to the Zimbabwe Commercial Farmers Union, top soil is integral to the healthy growth of plants and must be treated as so, related newsnet.co.zw.

Refraining from tilling the soil is advisable as this contributes towards maintaining its fertility, stated Phillip Tavuvanago, director of the union.

He added that farmers should create contour ridges in order to reduce the occurrence of soil erosion.

A conservation farming programme is currently being embarked upon by farmers operating in central Zimbabwe, it was further reported.

Soil erosion poses a significant threat to China's fertile south-west, according to the first study on the issue conducted in over 60 years by the country's ministry of water resources.
