A new initiative has been launched aimed at improving
water quality in the Thames region.
The Environment Agency's River Basin Management Plan is part of the European Union's Water Framework Directive.
Howard Davidson, a spokesman for the organisation, commented: "We need to make sure that the quantity and the quality of the water we have suits the needs of both ourselves and the environment around us."
According to the Environment Agency, there are a number of steps people can take to improve
water quality.
These include taking waste oil and chemicals to a recycling facility, rather than pouring them down the drain.
The use of phosphate-free laundry detergents can also help to prevent pollution, the organisation noted.
In related news, Scottish Water was recently fined after releasing high levels of biochemical oxygen into the Durris Burn.
