Need a premium grade soil moisture sensor that you can trust?

Oct 08 2014

The ML3 Soil Moisture and Temperature Sensor represents the latest step in the evolution of the Delta-T ThetaProbe series. It offers extra features, improved performance and a new look, without any price increase over its field-proven predecessor.

With its ± 1% accuracy the ML3 continues to set the global standard for soil moisture measurement - whilst the addition of a thermistor sensor enables simultaneous logging of soil temperature (when buried). A new cabling system makes it simple to extend or replace cables, offering a choice of 1m, 5m, 10m and 25m extensions. ML3 cables and connectors are buriable and environmentally protected to IP68.

The ML3’s salinity response and temperature range have also been improved - its output has been characterised at EC values up to 2000 mS.m-1, and it can operate at temperatures as low as -40oC.

The ML3 can be logged by any of the Delta-T data logger range and is also compatible with many other manufacturers’ data loggers. Despite its technical sophistication the ML3 makes it very easy to take reliable, accurate readings. Simply insert the probe into the soil, connect and power up your data logger (or hand held meter) and within seconds you can be measuring soil moisture and temperature.

The ML3 is buriable and maintenance-free. It can be inserted into augered holes or positioned in the wall of a trench (which is then carefully back-filled). Optional extension tubes assist placement and removal when burying at depth.

As the ML3 is frost resistant and low powered, it can be conveniently used buried at remote sites over long periods of time. In such instances it is possible to access sensor data wirelessly via a GPRS enabled data logger such as the Delta-T GP2. For portable applications the ML3 and Delta-T HH2 Handheld Meter can be ordered together, with carrying case, in the convenient form of the ThetaKit

ML3s are ideal for environmental research applications. Soil water is increasingly seen as one of the critical components for long-term studies of global climate and local environments. Many automatic weather stations can be expanded to include one or more ML3s. Other common application areas for ML3 use include soil science, agriculture, hydrology, forestry, turfgrass and crop trials.

The ThetaProbe’s class-leading accuracy, stability, reliability and long working life have made it the preferred choice for thousands of researchers worldwide over the last 20 years. The ML3 is the most sophisticated and easy-to use ThetaProbe yet designed.

Key Features of the GP2:

  • Class leading ± 1% soil moisture accuracy
  • Built-in temperature measurement (when buried)
  • Extendable cable system
  • Improved calibration for soil salinity
  • Ideal for phenotyping research.
