Subtle changes in net radiation drive climate change and determine the agricultural water requirement of the world’s food supply. Still, net radiation has long been among the most challenging meteorological measurements because it is the sum of four distinct variables. The new SN-500 Net Radiometer from Apogee Instruments (USA) provides independent measurements of each component for the best accuracy. The measurements are converted to a digital SDI-12 signal, eliminating the need for multiple datalogger channels. Each sensor includes a 0.2 W heater that keeps off water (liquid and frozen), minimising errors caused when dew, frost, rain, or snow block the radiation path. Apogee’s four-component net radiometer facilitates this measurement at a lower cost without compromising accuracy.
