Revolutionary new oxygen sensor delivers lead-free performance without compromise

DD-Scientific has announced the launch of its latest innovation, the OXLFF. This revolutionary new lead-free oxygen sensor sets a new benchmark in performance, ease of integration and value proposition for gas instrument manufacturers.

Aside from the obvious environmental and health benefits of moving away from traditional lead-based O2 sensors, lead-free alternatives offer a longer working life, negating the need for periodic servicing of devices which can be both costly and disruptive. Whilst end-users may enjoy these benefits, the integration of lead-free O2 sensors can prove challenging for instrument manufacturers who are required to make allowances in their designs for constant power to these sensors, an extended start-up time following loss of power as well as the impact that environmental factors can have on sensor output.

In response to these inherent barriers to adoption, DD-Scientific has leveraged over a decade of experience in lead-free O2 R&D to develop the OXLFF - an innovative new design which addresses the needs of instrument manufacturers and their customers alongside environmental considerations and legislative drivers. This genuine innovation in sensor technology is significantly easier and cheaper for OEMs to integrate than other lead-free sensors, whilst enabling manufacturers to offer end-users several enhancements to device performance.

The OXLFF oxygen sensor introduces six critical benefits that redefine what’s possible with lead-free O₂ sensing technology.

Its ultra-fast start-up time—under two minutes from zero power—eliminates the need to keep the sensor powered during shutdown. This is particularly valuable for portable instruments, as it removes the requirement for coin cell batteries or trickle charging, simplifying integration and reducing bill of materials costs. For mains-powered devices, the fast start-up minimizes downtime after power outages, servicing, or calibration. Additionally, the OXLFF shortens production time by reducing the sensor settling period before final testing.

The sensor offers an industry-leading T90 response time of less than three seconds, making it the fastest oxygen sensor available. This rapid response improves safety by ensuring instruments react quickly, giving users more time to respond in critical situations.

Its recovery rate matches this rapid response, enabling manufacturers to build more responsive devices that exceed performance expectations.
With best-in-class baseline offset and higher resolution than other lead-free sensors, the S+4OXLFF can detect subtle changes in oxygen concentration, including levels below 5%, making it suitable for a wide range of specialist applications.

The OXLFF is also significantly less sensitive to sudden pressure changes—up to ten times more stable than conventional sensors—leading to more accurate, reliable readings and fewer false alarms in real-world conditions.

Finally, with an operational life exceeding five years and no consumable components, the OXLFF outlasts many competing sensors by up to five times. This extended lifetime reduces the need for regular servicing, offering both manufacturers and end-users a more dependable and cost-effective solution.

By overcoming long-standing barriers to lead-free adoption, the OXLFF empowers a new generation of devices which offer greater reliability, have a longer working life and are more sustainable.

“Our mission has always been to develop sensors that make life easier for our customers while advancing safety for end users,” said Martin Kelly, R&D Director at DD-Scientific “The OXLFF delivers on this promise by offering a combination of speed, accuracy, and simplicity that is unmatched in the market.”

In combining their deep understanding of environmental regulation with extensive consultation among instrument manufacturers, DD-Scientific are proud to bring the OXLFF to market, a product which reinforces their commitment to advancing gas detection technology through innovation and collaboration.

DD-Scientific leads the market with the most comprehensive range and the largest global installed base of lead-free O2 sensors.
