The water quality on a housing estate in Lanarkshire has been found to be high despite fears of contamination.

North Lanarkshire Council together with Scottish Water have confirmed that people living on the North Motherwell housing estate have clean drinking water, after results from a water quality test were revealed.

Andrew McPherson, environmental health manager for the local authority, said: "The results came in three weeks ago and showed no sign of contaminants."

Fears first arose when the discovery of trichloroethylene on the site of the estate came to light and residents expressed their concern at a public meeting held last month.

Mr McPherson added that Scottish Water carried out independent tests, which confirmed that the water is safe to drink and does not contain the chemical.

Residents in Lanarkshire have also recently been able to benefit from a new water treatment project completed by Scottish Water earlier this month.

The £22 million initiative enables the production of 129 million litres of water every day, producing cleaner drinking water for residents.
