Air Monitoring
Monitoring on the Move
Mar 24 2017
The Smogmobile is a fully electric, zero emissions van fitted out with a suite of ET’s most cutting edge, accurate, and fast responding air quality monitoring instrumentation. This unique combination allows for the measurement of multiple pollutants while on the move, without the influence of the vehicle’s own emissions affecting the measurements. By analysing the GPS and pollutant concentration data using specialised software users are able to determine the spatial distribution of air pollution in a given area, and present the data in the form of colour-coded pollution maps that are easy for anyone to interpret.
In its standard configuration, the Smogmobile is capable of measuring particulates, ozone, NO2, CH4, CO2, and water vapour simultaneously, but other analysers can be easily swapped in and out. The vehicle is also equipped with a 6 metre telescopic mast which, when deployed, provides meteorological data which can be used to identify the direction of pollution sources.
The Smogmobile has been used in a wide variety of studies so far, including the measurement of SO2 from marine traffic in Southampton, the comparison of NO2 and PM10 levels outside schools, the measurement of methane from livestock, and many more. As the Smogmobile is a new development in the world of air quality monitoring, ET are only just beginning to realise its full potential, and the breadth of its possible applications.
