The effects of air pollution on human health and lifestyle are of a major concern today. There are many different pollutants contributing to

air pollution, however airborne particulates are one of the main contributors.

Particulate pollution has many affects on society including:

• Respiratory complaints and illnesses

• Loss of visibility due to haze, fog, smog and woodsmoke

• Affects on the global radiation balance and climate change

One instrument that can be used for the monitoring of all these effects is the nephelometer.

Ecotech’s (Australia) successful Aurora nephelometers have been used widely in haze and pollution monitoring (Aurora 1000) and for research into global warming (Aurora 3000). Ecotech, manufacturer of the Aurora 1000 and 3000 nephelometers is proud to announce the extension of it Aurora series with the introduction of new features, options and products.

Backscatter

The Aurora 3000 will now include backscatter as a standard feature. Backscatter is valuable in global warming research as it allows a differentiation between forward scatter and backscatter which is not possible in a standard integrating nephelometer.

PM2.5 monitoring

The Aurora series are now available with a PM2.5 inlet and flow control, allowing the instrument to sample PM2.5. This allows more accurate correlations to be calculated between PM2.5 mass measurements and Aurora light scattering readings as well as the substitution of PM mass monitors for the more cost effective Aurora in stable environments.

Polar Nephelometer

Ecotech is proud to present the new member of its Aurora nephelometer series the Aurora 4000 polar nephelometer. The Aurora 4000 is the first commercially available polar nephelometer on the market and is an essential tool for global warming research with its ability to divide light scatter into 4 segments, providing a more detailed and accurate look at how particulates are scattering solar radiation.

Applications for the nephelometer includes:

• Visibility monitoring including haze, fog and smog

• PM2.5 mass measurement correlation studies

• Global warming research

• Dust Sandstorm monitoring

• Bushfire monitoring

• Wood smoke monitoring

• Airport visibility
