A decision on whether Heathrow Airport will introduce a third runway will be postponed until January 2009, it has been announced.

UK transport secretary Geoff Hoon has said that the issue requires deep thought and "proper weight" before finalised.

Former transport secretary Ruth Kelly previously stated that a decision was due by the end of 2008, following a consultation in November.

Mr Hoon stated: "I will ensure that I give proper consideration to the evidence before me and will therefore take more time before making an announcement to the House, in January 2009."

The expansion, which would see the airport's capacity increase from 480,000 to 700,000 flights yearly, has come up against opposition from various groups.

The Liberal Democrats, Conservatives, and local residents have expressed concerns about aspects such as noise control and air quality deterioration.

Last month, London Mayor Boris Johnson pledged £15,000 towards the campaign against runway expansion and said he would be willing to contribute more to pay for any legal battles arising from the issue.
