Local residents in Thirsk are being invited to give their views on a proposed flood defence scheme for the area.

The Environment Agency will be hosting a drop-in session for members of the community on July 1st, with experts on hand to guide people through the possible options.

At present there are no formal flood defences in Thirsk.

Environment Agency project manager Richard Hartley said a wide range of options have been considered.

"Based on our studies, we are recommending a scheme using a combination of flood defence walls in Thirsk and an upstream flood storage area," he added.

Key groups will be consulted on the plans, including local residents, landowners and council members.

In related news, it was announced earlier this week that the strengthening of flood defences in Doncaster is nearing completion.

Almost £2 million has been spent to improve protection in the area.
