A section of a water pipeline in Baghdad has been damaged by militants, it has been reported.

Reuters related that the US military forces provided the information and that the incident meant that the water supply of thousands of people was cut off.

The explosion that caused the damage occurred on Thursday October 30th and resulted in an 18-inch hole being blown out of a section of the pipeline.

It is used to carry drinking water to the districts of Rusafa, Karrada and Adhamiyah, according to a representative from the US military.

This is not an isolated incident in the country, it was pointed out, as militant groups have previously sabotaged structures such as oil refineries and power lines.

However, there is some optimism surrounding the recent news that these incidents have now dropped to a four-year low, Reuters stated.

Residents of Hechi city in China's Guangxi province fell ill this month after their water supplies became contaminated with arsenic following an industrial overflow caused by heavy rain.
