Work has commenced on a new flood protection scheme in Swinefleet near Goole, it has been revealed.

According to the Environment Agency, the work is costing almost £12 million and will ensure that around 10,600 properties are protected from water damage.

The initiative will also provide protection for the M18 motorway and three sewage treatment works.

Project manager Keith Slaney commented: "This work will improve the embankment in the area to better protect the residents and businesses from risk of flooding."

The work is being carried out as part of a package to protect 20,000 properties in the east Yorkshire area.

In related news, the Environment Agency announced earlier this week that the areas of Ryther and Cawood, near Selby, are set to benefit from new flood defences.

The scheme will boost protection for around 450 homes and commercial properties.
