Estonia to receive water quality monitoring funding

Estonia will receive €1.53 million (£1.31 million) of funding to help develop a water quality monitoring system.

The money has been set aside by the European Regional Development Fund and it is hoped that the scheme will give Estonian's more information on environmental issues, according to uudised.err.ee.

"People will be able to access data on the water quality in their neighbourhood, or the environmental indicators in one or another area," minister of the environment Keit Pentus told the news provider.

He also suggested the initiative will allow environmental specialists to spend fewer hours amassing data and more time analysing findings to discover relevant patterns and trends.

The existing data monitoring system will be incorporated into the new development, which is set to be fully operational in 2015.

In September, ERR News reported that a nine-person team from Estonia headed to Sweden to complete the biggest water pollution control training exercise ever seen in the region.
