New infrared gas sensor to enhance worker safety

Honeywell has developed an optical non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) gas sensor for detecting flammable hydrocarbons, including methane, propane and butane, in industrial environments. The sensor is intended for integration into both fixed and portable gas detection systems used across sectors such as mining, oil and gas, petrochemical processing and manufacturing.

The new sensor uses infrared absorption rather than catalytic bead (pellistor) technology, offering improved resistance to sensor poisoning that can reduce the performance of conventional combustible gas detectors in harsh operating conditions. This can help improve measurement reliability while reducing the likelihood of false alarms or premature sensor replacement.

Designed for use in demanding industrial environments, the sensor incorporates a condensation management system to maintain performance in humid or confined spaces and is engineered to withstand dust and significant temperature variation. As an optical device, it also has lower power requirements than many conventional combustible gas sensors, which can extend the operating life of battery-powered portable gas detectors.
