A Dual-Gas Hydrocarbon / Carbon Dioxide Sensor in a Single Industry Standard Size Package

Jul 17 2014

The Dual-Gas ‘Platinum’ series of miniature infrared gas sensors from Dynament (UK) provide simultaneous measurement of Hydrocarbons / Carbon Dioxide within a single industry standard 20mm x 16mm package. They are now available in a Low Power version which consumes only 15 milliamps @ 3 volts dc equivalent to 7.5 milliamps per sensor. An additional option is for EN 50271 / SIL 1 SIRA certified versions.

The sensors are particularly suited for use in Portable Gas Detectors where measurement of Hydrocarbons and Carbon Dioxide in a single package provides a saving in both a space and current consumption thereby increasing the operating time of battery powered equipment.

The ‘Ex’ certified versions of the sensor have both IECEx and ATEX certification for Industrial and Mining use. The Mining certfication includes M1 Ex d+ia I Ma.

The sensors can accurately detect gas levels over the range of 0 to 100% volume. The sensors can be pre-configured for specific measurement ranges according to customer requirements. Methane versions feature auto-ranging in order to provide high resolution for Lower Explosive Level (LEL) measurement and in addition contain a fully temperature compensated Propane characteristic.

The standard operating temperature range for the sensors is -20 to +50 degrees C.

Every individual sensor undergoes full temperature compensation over this range for Methane, Propane and Carbon Dioxide gases with the characteristics stored within the sensor electronics.

Extended temperature versions of the ‘Non-Ex’ form only are available to special order covering either -40 to +50 degrees C (‘XT’ type) or -40 to +75 degrees C (‘XTR’ type).
