EU PFAS packaging ban creates immediate testing challenge for laboratories

A new EU restriction on per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food-contact packaging comes into force on Wednesday, 12 August 2026, placing laboratories and packaging manufacturers under immediate pressure to demonstrate compliance.

Under the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, food-contact packaging must not contain PFAS above defined concentration limits, including 25ppb for an individual PFAS, 250ppb for the sum of PFAS and 50ppm for total organic fluorine.

Crucially, the regulation does not include a sell-through period for existing stock, meaning affected products placed on the EU market from the implementation date must already comply with the new requirements.

The approaching deadline is expected to increase demand for both total fluorine screening and targeted PFAS speciation analysis as manufacturers seek to verify materials before products enter the supply chain.

For analytical laboratories, the regulation presents both a capacity and methodology challenge. High sample volumes, diverse packaging materials and low reporting limits require validated analytical workflows capable of supporting regulatory compliance within tight commercial timescales.

The restriction also highlights the growing role of analytical testing in implementing PFAS policy, as laboratories move beyond environmental monitoring into routine compliance testing for manufactured products.
