The standards of water quality inspectors and regulators in Canada have been subjected to scrutiny by a recent report from a federal commissioner.

According to Scott Vaughan, who submitted the paper to parliament yesterday, "gaps remain" in the country's water quality inspection methods and Canadians cannot be assured of the safety of water they drink in certain public places.

"Given the potentially serious health consequences of contaminated drinking water, it is important for the federal government to know that in all areas under its jurisdiction drinking water is safe," his report said.

Mr Vaughan continued to add that inspectors from Health Canada need to maintain consistent standards to ensure the high quality of the country's drinking water supplies.
Health Canada's aim is to ensure that Canadian citizens are among "the […] healthiest people in the world" by relying upon extensive research into related issues.
