Air monitoring
High-precision, calibration-free and reliable methane measuring instrument
May 12 2025
The AMS from Argos Messtechnik is a high-precision, calibration-free device designed for dependable and accurate methane (CH₄) detection. It also has optional measurement capabilities for CO₂ and H₂O levels in the air. Using highly advanced laser technology, the AMS delivers precise, real-time readings and enables detailed gas composition analysis, making it an ideal solution for a wide variety of applications. Argos Messtechnik has always taken feedback from their clientele very seriously; the AMS has been designed as a high-tech solution to overcome the methane detection challenges they were facing. Its development, as with all Argos Messtechnik products, took place entirely in-house, and was carried out from initial concept to prototype to series production from the factory in Germany.
The AMS plays a crucial role in leak detection and monitoring in the oil and gas sector. Its ability to identify even minute gas leaks on pipelines and tanks at an early stage helps mitigate potential hazards, reduce safety risks, and ensure regulatory compliance. The instrument is also used for continuous air quality monitoring at oil wells, enabling operators to detect risks early and manage operations safely. In addition, the AMS offers advanced gas analysis by measuring methane, CO₂, and H₂O, enabling a comprehensive air quality assessment.
The AMS is designed for versatility and ease of deployment. It can be operated in a stationary mode via USB or mains power or used in remote locations with its self-sufficient solar solution, with an integrated battery. This makes it ideal for areas without direct infrastructure access. Measurement data can be transmitted in real time via a serial USB interface or wirelessly using mobile radio (MQTT), providing seamless data integration into existing monitoring systems.
Compliant with the EU Methane Act, the AMS supports organisations in meeting their regulatory obligations to reduce methane emissions. Its continuous leak detection and monitoring capabilities contribute to effective emission control, helping to minimise environmental impact. The device’s robust stainless-steel housing ensures reliable performance even in harsh environmental conditions. At the same time, its low power consumption and compatibility with solar modules make it suitable for long-term, energy-independent use in difficult-to-access areas.
Typical applications for the AMS include stationary leak detection on oil drilling platforms and pipelines, drone-based portable methane detection, and environmental monitoring in remote locations. Its easy handling and cloud integration capabilities allow for managing multiple devices simultaneously, making it a practical and scalable solution for industrial gas monitoring.
