Work halted on water treatment plant

May 11 2009

Work has come to a standstill on a new waste water treatment plant near Selby.

According to the Yorkshire Post, construction at the £2.1 million site was halted after a series of objections from local residents.

The plant is expected to cover an area larger than a football pitch and will feature two six-metre towers.

Residents are said to be concerned that a nearby 12th century church will be damaged by construction vehicles.

"Objectors say Yorkshire Water was so confident of gaining planning permission that preparatory work was begun on site before the planning consultation period ended," the newspaper stated.

In a consultation letter, Yorkshire Water reassured those living locally that the work will be hidden from public view and is not situated close to residential properties.

Yorkshire Water recently invited Scarborough residents to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the town's wastewater works.
