A waste water treatment works in the UK is to begin welcoming members of the public, it has emerged.

Yorkshire Water is set to open a visitor centre at its Esholt treatment works near Bradford.

Work on the £500,000 centre has begun, with interactive education tools promised for visitors.

According to the Yorkshire Post, the centre's owners are hoping to capitalise on interest in the TV series Emmerdale, which attracts tourists to a nearby village used to film the show.

However, Graham Dixon, director of Yorkshire Water's environmental business unit, hopes that the attraction will also bring an educational boost to the local community.

"The new environmental visitor centre promises to be a valuable interactive education tool for the region that we hope will be enjoyed by thousands of schoolchildren and members of the public alike," he said.

Based in Bradford, Yorkshire Water operates more than 700 water and sewage treatment works and 120 reservoirs.
