Citizens of Belfast, County Antrim and County Down in Northern Ireland have been advised to boil their tap water before drinking it following the discovery of a problem at a water treatment plant.

Dunmore Point's water treatment process has experienced problems of late, according to a representative from NI Water, which may be impacting the quality of water in 220,000 homes, reported the BBC.

Spokesperson for the organisation David Dangerfield stated: "We take thousands of water quality samples and one of the samples that was reported to us yesterday suggested there may be a problem with the treatment process."

A statement from the firm said that tests on the water will continue and when its quality can be assured, residents will be notified.

NI Water, which offers its services to more than 780,000 customers, is Northern Ireland's sole provider of water and sewerage services.
