Residents living around the Philippine capital Manila have been assured that their water is safe, following the death of fish in the supplying river.

According to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), water from the Angat reservoir that supplies the metro Manila area is safe for human consumption, despite a high level of fish deaths in the water system.

The BFAR has said the deaths are down to rising levels of ammonia entering the ecological system from rotting tree limbs and plants, reported businessmirror.com.

"We are not sure yet, but there is a big possibility that the fishkill was brought about by the change of temperature in the river system, brought about by the change in weather conditions," said Mendel Garcia, chief of the Angat Watershed Area Team.

Manila water officials have assured residents that the water quality for humans has not been affected by the circumstances.

The Angat reservoir supplies Metro Manila with 97 per cent of its domestic water supply, according to adpc.net.
