Leeds City Council 'saves money after cutting bottled water'

Mar 05 2009

By removing bottled water dispensers from its offices and encouraging employees and visitors to use tap water instead, Leeds City Council has managed to save around £30,000 a year.

These are the claims of its representatives, who have stated that using bottled water in its offices is an unacceptable waste of resources and finance.

Richard Brett, Leeds' deputy council leader, stated: "There is no need for us to rely on water supplies being brought in from elsewhere when we have perfectly drinkable water from the tap."

He added that the financial costs of bottled water in the workplace are just as detrimental as environmental costs and that it is important the council plays its part in reducing waste.

The north England city is leading the way when it comes to water innovation, it appears.

Following a student referendum last December, Leeds University announced that it would withdraw all bottled water for sale from its campus.
