All water supplies tested in Lahore in 2006 as part of a study by the California State University were found to be contaminated.

The results of the research were presented at the Woodrow Wilson Centre during a conference on Pakistan's water supplies this week, reported dailytimes.com.pk.

Economics teacher at California State University Anita Chaudhry revealed that the pollutants found in the water include arsenic, iron and bacteria.

The same study four years previously found 56 per cent of water samples to be contaminated.

Ms Chaudhry also said that access to water in the area lasts only for a few hours daily and sewage remains untreated and is allowed to infiltrate groundwater.

She suggested that authorities implement a system to harvest rainwater and reduce the amount of water distracted from the ground in order to improve the situation.

In Australia last week, it was announced that plans to convert wastewater into safe, drinkable water would go ahead in Queensland
