Flood protection work is now underway in Lewes, with efforts being made to reduce flooding in the Cliffe area.

Lewes is situated in the floodplains of the River Ouse, making parts of it vulnerable to severe flooding.

Work will focus on the area between Riverlodge Doctor's Surgery in the north to the Lewes Rowing Club in the south.

Several new walls will be constructed, as well as timber-faced flood gates and demountable flood defences.

Mark Douch, area flood risk manager for Lewes, said the measures will help to protect more than 200 homes and businesses.

"Lewes is a unique and important town, so we have worked extensively to ensure the materials and design of the new flood protection works match those traditionally used in the Cliffe conservation area," he added.

In related news, work commenced last week on Nottingham's new £51 million Left Bank Flood Risk Alleviation Scheme.

The initiative will provide protection for more than 16,000 properties.
