Water quality in south remains high despite leakage problems

The water quality in the south of England remains high in spite of having lost nearly 100 million litres of water every day in leaks over the last year.

A report released by Ofwat has revealed that Southern Water failed to meet its goal to reduce leaks.

It was one of the six utility companies across the country that did not reach the targets set by Ofwat.

As well as being responsible for causing the loss of huge volumes of water, Ofwat also criticised the firm for the poor condition of its water treatment plants.

Regina Finn, Ofwat's chief executive, said: "Most companies stepped up to the challenge of tackling leakage. Those who haven't, we have put on notice.”

Despite the poor ratings, Southern Water is still achieving some of the best water quality in Europe.

Last month, Southern Water confirmed it will begin a £2.8 million initiative to make improvements at the Fawkham Water Supply Works to produce a high standard of water in the Kent area.
