Scottish Water has announced it is to invest in improving the water quality in South Lanarkshire.

It is planning to provide a package of waste water upgrades worth over £5 million at three locations.

The water firm states that this will ensure "natural environment in South Lanarkshire continues to be protected and extra capacity in the waste water network will allow local communities to grow and thrive".

Scottish Water plans to invest £2.5 million at Stonehouse Waste Water Treatment Works (WWTWs), with construction manager Gavin Noble saying the new equipment will enhance the water quality in Cander and Avon Waters.

Lanark and Carstairs Village WWTWs will also receive funding of £1.35 million and £1.24 million respectively.

Work is expected to be completed at the three sites at the end of the year and contractors have already started to make the changes at the WWTWs.

Scottish Water will also soon begin to upgrade a WWTW at Kirkconnel, at a cost of £1.5 million.
