In the rail industry, where systems are expected to perform reliably over decades, consistency is as critical as innovation. The long-standing partnership between Titan Enterprises and Grinsty Rail highlights how product design continuity, reliability of supply, and engineering collaboration have supported the performance and longevity of rail de-icing systems. By integrating Titan’s FT2 radial turbine flowmeters into its vehicle-mounted de-icing systems, Grinsty Rail has achieved defined fluid control, operational reliability in harsh environments, and - crucially - the ability to refurbish and extend system life without costly redesigns. The partnership demonstrates the strategic value of working with a supplier committed to long-term stability in a rapidly evolving technological landscape, without compromising innovation.
Rolling stock operators must modernise engineering systems while ensuring reliability over long asset lifecycles. Components need to deliver precise performance and remain consistently available over time. Grinsty Rail’s de-icing systems, which help maintain safe rail operations in winter, operate in demanding environments exposed to vibration and extreme temperatures. To meet these challenges, Grinsty Rail has partnered with Titan Enterprises, a specialist in precision flow measurement. The long-term collaboration is built on a shared commitment to reliability, performance and product continuity for long-life rail applications.
Grinsty Rail turned to Titan Enterprises and its FT2 turbine flowmeter technology to deliver precise, dependable flow measurement within its de-icing systems.
Colin Wood, Grinsty Rail’s Operations Manager, suggested: “The challenge was Grinsty needed a liquid flowmeter that was highly reliable to operate within our de-icing systems. The systems themselves are designed for longevity, often remaining in service for many years.”
For Grinsty Rail, Titan delivers design stability, ongoing availability and engineering consistency - an approach that is invaluable for long-term planning and investment.
“Titan gives us the confidence that components specified today will still be available tomorrow and they understand the realities of long-life infrastructure,” continued Colin.
Each system is designed with a dual architecture: electronics and control systems on one side; fluid handling and delivery systems on the other.
Titan’s FT2 flowmeters are embedded within the fluid dynamics side, providing accurate measurement of de-icing fluid as it is distributed across the rail network. This multi-range radial flow turbine flowmeter with optical or hall-effect detection uses a low inertia turbine supported on robust sapphire bearings in a chemically resistant housing. Nine flow ranges (0.05 to 160 litres per minute), a choice of ‘plug-in’ fittings and individual traceable calibration make this FT2 meter one of the most flexible flow measurement devices available.
As part of a move towards more sustainable operations, Grinsty Rail adopted a new biodegradable dual de/anti-icing fluid. While environmentally beneficial, the fluid’s higher viscosity and opaque green appearance created challenges for existing optical flow sensors.
Working with Titan Enterprises, Grinsty Rail replaced the optical sensors with Titan’s OG2 oval gear technology, which is unaffected by fluid colour and performs reliably with higher-viscosity liquids. The solution maintained accurate, repeatable flow measurement while enabling the transition to environmentally compliant fluid formulations.
In long-life industries such as rail, innovation must be balanced with reliability and continuity. Titan supports this approach by prioritising durable, consistent product designs that remain available throughout extended asset lifecycles.
As Grinsty Rail’s de-icing systems undergo refurbishment to extend operational life, Titan’s FT2 and OG flowmeters continue to integrate seamlessly with both legacy and modern infrastructure. This continuity simplifies upgrades, reduces downtime and helps maintain proven system performance.
In an industry defined by long asset lifecycles and increasing technological complexity, Grinsty Rail’s collaboration with Titan Enterprises has delivered reliable performance in demanding environments, long-term system stability across multiple vehicle platforms, reduced total cost of ownership, and more efficient refurbishment programmes. Just as importantly, it has fostered a trusted, long-standing supplier relationship.
This partnership demonstrates how the right supplier can support both innovation and operational stability. The success of the Titan-Grinsty relationship is built on close engineering alignment, with both organisations developing a deep understanding of each other’s systems, requirements and operational challenges over many years of collaboration.
