England will miss its target for reducing
landfill diversion by 2013, a report has suggested.
Writing on online resource LetsRecycle.com, sector commentator Caelia Quinault notes that the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is due to look at action can be taken to increase the amount of waste which is diverted as a result of this.
The report was discussed at a meeting of Defra's Waste Strategy Board which took place earlier this year.
Now, the organisation has elected to collaborate with the Local Government Association to see how it can help authorities around the country to reduce waste outside the remits of the Waste Infrastructure Development Programme.
It is also to work with the Environment Agency to see where regulatory barriers to
landfill diversion can be reduced.
Defra's Waste Strategy targets places greater emphasis on waste prevention and sets objectives to reduce the amount of household waste which is not recycled, composted or re-used.
