'Investment needed' to preserve biodiversity in Cayman Islands

Mar 05 2010

Greater investment is needed in order to preserve biodiversity in the Cayman Islands, it has been suggested.

A special dinner is being held later this month in a bid to raise funds and protect land that is currently under threat from development, Caymannetnews.com reports.

Janet Walker, council member of the National Trust for the Cayman Islands, said she would like to see more land preserved.

"2010 being declared the International Year of Biodiversity makes this an opportune time to raise both money and awareness about the diminishing biodiversity in our islands," she commented.

The National Trust for the Cayman Islands is seeking donations for its Land Reserve Fund, which will be used to purchase land that is at risk.

A number of celebrations have been arranged to mark the International Year of Biodiversity, including a gathering at the United Nations General Assembly in New York between September 20th and September 22nd.
