Environmental sustainability is about more than just cutting carbon emissions, it has been claimed.
This is according to Peter McManners, visiting executive fellow of Henley Business School at the University of Reading, who noted that people tend to focus on carbon when discussing climate change.
Speaking at Sustainabilitylive!, which took place last week, he said that sustainability is "much broader" than this.
Organisations looking to reduce their emissions should ensure they do so within the context of a larger plan, Mr McManners commented.
"When you have strategies in place you can then tactically exploit the regulations, but if you're not careful you can end up being attracted down a dead-end because you focus too much on carbon," he explained.
Meanwhile, Severn Trent Water recently published a report calling for the water industry to improve the reliability of its network and reduce carbon emissions.
Entitled Changing Course, it suggests that without reform, consumers will be saddled with higher bills in the future.
