London Mayor and Conservative MP for the UK Boris Johnson has lent his support to anti-runway extension plans at Heathrow airport by pledging £15,000 to the cause.

He has also said he is prepared to contribute more towards the legal battle which may ensue as a result of the plans.

A league of 21 local communities encompassing four million citizens and the Environmental Agency have joined Mr Johnson in expressing concern that expanding the runway at Heathrow Airport would violate European Union (EU) pollution guidelines.

According to the government, the plans will only go ahead if they are found to meet noise and environmental regulations.

A spokesperson for Mr Johnson stated: "The mayor is anxious to ensure the concerns of Londoners whose environment would be affected by a further expansion of Heathrow are fully addressed."

Another individual to express concern over the plans is European environmental commissioner Stavros Dimas, who said last week that he believes they stand in opposition to EU pollution limits.
