Air quality monitoring specialist Enviro Technology and the University of Leeds’ Institute of Transport Studies are collaborating to provide bespoke vehicle emissions monitoring for local authorities.

The service spotlights fleet characterisation and provides emissions profile information on a per vehicle basis. Benefits include the ability to identify the abundance and significance of highemission vehicles as well as segmentation of data by vehicle type (e.g. car, bus, HGV), age and emission standard.

Data is gathered by Enviro Technology’s unique Accusan system. The system uses remote sensor technology to measure NOx, CO, CO2, HC and the ‘smoke factor’ of transport on a realtime, per-vehicle basis. Coupling this with an automatic number plate recognition camera ensures detailed information is captured for each vehicle passing the monitoring station without the driver needing to stop.

The usability of the data is enhanced by interpretation from the Institute of Transport Studies. Measurement and analysis are typically carried out over a one to four week timeframe, providing comprehensive information to help shape vehicle emissions management strategies.

“When it comes to air quality management, knowledge is power,” explains Duncan Mounsor, Sales and Marketing Director at Enviro Technology. “By teaming up with the Institute of Transport Studies we have made it far easier for local authorities to develop targeted, effective strategies.”

Previous users of Enviro Technology’s Accusan include Transport for London, Bristol City Council, London Borough of Ealing, London Borough of Southwark and groups of local authorities in South Yorkshire and

Devon. Funding may be obtainable from the LTP as the data is applicable to traffic management and air quality aspects of legislation.
