Scientists have been involved in creating a product which can help cut down the amount of fertilisers used by farmers and improve water quality in the countryside.

Cleveland Biotech (CBio) has said that the Amnite A100 will improve biological activity in the soil, which will enable plants to gain nutrients more easily.

This therefore will remove the necessity for farmers to use large quantities of nitrogen and fertilisers, which will have a positive impact on reaching green targets.

Managing director of CBio Ben Hoskyns said that initial trials have both improved crop yields and produced significant environmental benefits.

"This product could provide the means to significantly reduce the quantity of nitrogen applied to the soil and therefore the amount that reaches the water ways," he stated.

Therefore, water quality in nearby rivers, lakes and shores will be protected and agriculture in the UK will be more sustainable.

Central Ayrshire MP Brian Donohoe recently told the Irvine Herald that water running off from farmland damages the coastline and causes contamination on Scotland's beaches.
