A council is set to improve the water quality of a lake in Yorkshire by removing large fish and reducing overcrowding.

Later today (January 20th 2011), Kirklees Council will oversee the process whereby roach and perch will be transferred from a lake at Wilton Park in Batley to Cottingley Manor Lake and Yeadon Tarn.

The Environment Agency said this will help younger fish in the lake to develop, as well as improve breeding conditions by raising its water quality.

Fisheries officer for the group Pete Turner said: "The move will free up space in Wilton Park and support fish populations at the other two locations."

Adam Ogilvie, executive member for leisure at Leeds City Council, added that this procedure will help "boost fish stock numbers" at the lake.

Kirklees Council is committed to developing the area's biodiversity and improving natural habitats for its wildlife as part of its green network plans.
