Many individuals and organisations have preconceptions about what spill absorbents are, not usually being aware of anything beyond the traditional clays, ‘kitty litter’ and treated wood chip based products that are rarely seen anywhere other than under cars in a garage in a muddy puddle. They are not seen as being able to rise above challenges much more than a sticking plaster type fix that will in a few narrow fields of use.
Their limitations are based upon how they work, by ADsorbing ONTO the surface of the spill. This limits the surface area that is available to adsorb spill and means that a greater quantity of product is required to deal with a spill incident and to be subsequently disposed of. This has been the status quo for many years now and the market has had low expectation of such products.
Recently viable alternatives that are based on a totally different composition that work by ABsorption INTO the structure of the granule are coming to the fore. Products such as InstaZorb based on thermally expanded volcanic minerals with proprietary surfactant treatments) have a far greater surface area and are massively more flexible in application, being able to absorb any liquid or semi liquid – from bodily fluids to paint!
What this means to an organisation is that it can review its ISO14001 policy as a step towards reducing waste to landfill. One product can service a variety of spill incidents and reduce cleaning chemical and water usage in the process, whilst if landfill disposal costs are a consideration, then what must be sent to landfill is greatly reduced as it is now by weight more spill than spill control product.
Thanks to these properties new age ‘super absorbents’ can now benefit more than those that already had a spill control policy in manufacturing and general heavy industry, but more and more diverse fields such as laboratories, supermarkets, food logistic operations, fire services, the military…. And on and on!
InstaZorb is an extremely flexible, nontoxic absorbent granule that has been available in Europe and the US for over ten years and is used throughout Europe and the Middle East.
