Two Greater Manchester companies that breached environmental legislation have been prosecuted by the Environment Agency as part of a campaign to crack down on illegal vehicle dismantlers.

Operation Scrap was carried out across the north-west to reduce the number of sites operating without the necessary permit and ensure their activities do not cause damage to human or environmental health.

As a result, successful legal action has been taken against both Oldham Van Breakers and Bury's Breaking Toyotas.

Environment manager for Greater Manchester Gordon Whitaker said that the agency is committed to ensuring all vehicle dismantlers operate in a way which protects the environment, as well as making sure that there is a level playing field for all commercial companies.

"I would remind all operators that they should check they have the necessary permits in place to carry out their activities, or they could face prosecution," he stated.

Mr Whitaker added that both prosecuted companies knew they were operating illegally.
