It has been revealed that low-level radioactive waste has been found in a wastewater plant in Ottawa.

A memo from Nancy Schepers, deputy city manager of Ottawa, detailed that a batch of waste had been turned away by border regulators after it was found to be radioactive.

The waste came from the R O Pickard Environmental Centre at the end of last month and a further two loads were this week found to be contaminated.

However, this has not affected the quality of drinking water at the plant, claimed Ms Schepers.

"Existing loads of biosolids that showed low levels of radioactivity have been quarantined," she explained. "I can assure you that our drinking water continues to be very safe."

A full assessment of the waste is currently being executed, she added.

This news comes after it was revealed that 40 pounds of hydrochloric acid was mistakenly added to water supplies in Ohio this week.
