Stop Making Excuses for Not Wearing a Respiratory Mask

Jan 11 2017

It is estimated that thousands of workers suffer from breathing or lung problems which they believe are caused or made worse by their work.

The main benefits of wearing Respiratory Protective Equipment (RPE) – more commonly referred to as a mask is that it helps prevent you from getting ill and therefore helps you to work more safely.

Wearing a mask can prevent the development of respiratory illness symptoms caused by inhalation of hazardous substances at work (e.g. coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness or difficulty in breathing).

So What’s Your Excuses?

  • 'I don’t think I need it'
  •  'It’s only a quick job'

Even a few minutes of exposure can make you ill. Many dangerous substances exist as a fine dust or as a gas or vapour which you can’t see in the air but can still be dangerous.

Your employer has a responsibility to protect your health and needs to inform you of the potentially dangerous substances you may be exposed to at work.

It may be that a risk assessment indicates that only a few minutes’ exposure to a substance in the air could harm your health, whether now or later in life.

  •  'It’s uncomfortable'
  • 'It’s hard to talk and my colleagues can’t hear me'

By participating in the purchase of the mask selection, this will help you find a more comfortable mask which is most suitable for you and therefore you’re more likely to wear.

a1-cbiss now supply RPE masks from leading brand manufacturer, Scott Safety. The RPE range has been designed for superior comfort and protection with different sizes and designs available.

Depending on the shape and size of your face, you may require a different mask. One size does not fit all. The new Scott Safety AVIVA half mask respirator has been designed in three sizes – small, medium and large. It has a reflex double seal which absorbs facial movements, maintains the facial seal and thus offers maximum protection and comfort. The AVIVA features an enhanced voice panel which allows you to be heard by your colleagues whilst wearing the mask.

Some masks require a tight fit to your face. With these types, it is essential that you are fit tested as part of the selection process to ensure that the mask forms a good seal to your face.
