The increased consumption of bottled drinking water has led to the introduction of new regulations to which manufacturers must comply. The new regulations apply to the country in which the bottled water is purchased and consumed; therefore, manufacturers must adhere to multiple international regulations.

For example:

The following regulations for toxic elements have been introduced in China:-

  • GB 8537: 2008: Governs the use of natural mineral water
  • BG 17324:2003: Hygienic standard of bottled purified water for drinking
  • GB 5749:2006: Standards for drinking water quality
  • GB 3838: 2002: Environmental Quality Standard for surface water standard limits

The following regulations to toxic elements have been introduced in India and are governed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS):-

  • BIS 10500:1991: Specifies the drinking water requirements
  • IS: 13428:1998: Packaged Natural Mineral Water
  • IS: 14543: 2004: Packaged Drinking Water

The Thermo Scientific iCAP 6200 ICP

It is possible to rapidly and effectively analyze for toxic elements in drinking and bottled water using the Thermo Scientific iCAP 6200 ICP (from the Thermo Scientific iCAP 6000 Series). The analysis is made simple by the use of the Environmental Method Template which is included as standard in the instrument software.

This analysis-ready method template enables ‘out-of-the-box’ analysis with little or no requirement for method development.

Summary

The Thermo Scientific iCAP 6200 ICP is an extremely effective instrument with which to analyze toxic elements in drinking and bottled waters. This is because it achieves powerful analyte detection and provides a cost effective solution for the routine analysis of liquids in laboratories with standard sample throughput requirements. In addition, the iCAP 6200 is very simple to use and therefore even a novice user can easily generate excellent results with the minimum investment of time and enables a highly cost efficient sample analysis regime.
