New report highlights wastewater performance

Oct 21 2011

A new report published by Global Water Intelligence (GWI) has shown that better monitoring of drinking water and wastewater regulations could be needed in many countries.

The study covered 28 different nations and concluded that better enforcement of environmental legislation could lead to improved investment and other opportunities in the water sector in the future.

Fabiola Alvarado of GWI suggested that as wastewater laws are relatively new and vary little between different countries, there could be more scope for improvements in this area.

However, she noted that governments in some nations may not have the resources to complete regular inspections at wastewater treatment sites.

Ms Alvarado also stated the best way forward is to increase the monitoring of water companies to ensure they are meeting existing standards, rather than introducing new parameters.

Last week, the Environment Agency of England and Wales revealed it would conduct a major water quality study across north-westerly regions.
