International Mercury Conference taking place in Cape Town in July

From 21 – 26 July 2024, the world’s leading mercury researchers will convene in Cape Town, South Africa for the 16th International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant (ICMGP). This years’ theme is “From Minamata to Africa and beyond: Addressing Mercury Challenges in Global Environment Change.” For the first time in the conference series 30 year history, the meeting will take place on the African continent. This will only be the second time ICMGP will take place in the southern hemisphere also Dr Lynwill G Martin, Co-Chair ICMGP 2024 explains. Together with Dr Joy Leaner and Prof Vernon Somerset the three have been driving the process to create greater awareness of mercury research on the African continent and they are excited to welcome everyone to South Africa as this will be a first visit to Cape Town for many ICMGP delegates. The week promises to be full of fascinating talks as well as new themes that will be presented. Two plenaries to be on the lookout for will be the Mercury Pollution and Biodiversity session as well as the Mercury within the Petrochemical and Energy Industry. With over 34 sessions and 200 orals that will be presented in the week, delegates will be spoiled for choice to decide which talks to attend. For this meeting there will be a variety talks that will focus on the effectiveness of the Minamata Convention, mercury in polar region, ASGM as well as mercury research within the southern hemisphere where we’ve seen an increase in scientific publications from this region in the last few years.
