Bosses at north-west-based United Utilities have suggested the firm is hoping to become the UK's most prominent supplier by continuing to invest huge sums into improving
water quality.
The firm expects to have shelled out £3.6 billion on making environmental improvements in its local area between 2010 and 2015.
Chief executive Steve Mogford suggested that since the firm was privatised, it has invested £3 billion in enhancing the water quality of public bathing areas alone.
"Looking ahead, our aim is to become the UK's leading water company," Mr Mogford declared.
He spoke as the company revealed it had met its targets for fixing leakages and frozen pipes despite been hampered by one of the worst winters the UK has ever experienced.
In the Christmas and new year period, the firm took 80,000 calls in relation to burst pipes.
Recently United Utilities called on bathroom product manufacturers to label their items more accurately to stop people flushing baby wipes down the toilet and clogging up the sewage system.
